iTunes Review

Anyone who couldn’t get enough of that mind-melting psych-rock and confectionary mod-pop featured on Rhino’s 2001’s acclaimed box set Nuggets II: Original Artyfacts From The British Empire And Beyond need look no further than 2004’s The Rubble Collection - Volumes  11 to 20 which plays like a proper sequel. Boasting a colossal 159 songs, this collection digs deeper into the rubble of rare ‘60s British freakbeat to unearth the shiniest of gems starting with the Accent’s “Wind Of Change,” a pulsing piece of acid-rock that first appeared in 1967 as a B-side to the more lysergic laced “Red Sky At Night.” Although Fire’s infectious “Father’s Name Is Dad” normally gets included on comps like this, the similarly catchy “Treacle Toffee World” plays here with Willy Wonka whimsy before the Game’s bass-heavy “Help Me Mummy’s Gone” rocks with squealing guitar feedback like a long lost song by the Creation. Even the warped baroque tune “June” by Nirvana (the one that settled out of court with Kurt Cobain over moniker rights) surfaces here in its dandified powdered-wig glory.
