Editors’ Notes

This Austin-based trio, led by the powerful guitar riffs and ethereal vocals of frontwoman Lauren Larson, has drawn comparisons to Sonic Youth and Blonde Redhead, while mapping out their own post-punk alternative terrain. The opening shimmers of “Rubicon” show amazing complexity for the three-piece, while “Burst” turns up the sizzle until the pop hooks melt into the layered tonal patterns. Their second album, Phantoms, is packed with loose rock influences that converge into swaths of pure beauty. The guitars encircling the pulsing rhythms of “The Push,” the explosive tension percolating throughout “Run Wild” and the potent drum rumbles that puncture the shoe-gaze aura of “Dancing Blind” are the sounds of an expert group pulling out all the stops. Rolling Stone magazine named them one of the nation’s best unsigned bands before they were snatched up by their current label. The notice came after impressive performances at various music industry showcases. Said to be recorded at various Austin studios, living rooms and closets, Phantoms is an expression of well-defined talent.

Customer Reviews

Ume have struck gold. An album that reflects thier live show!

I've followed Ume since Urgent Sea. I've seen them live many times, and until thier last EP they never managed to truely captured the genius of their live shows in the studio. Thier amazing songwriting and intense live energy always seemed muted on previous recordings. Phantoms finally captures that racking spirit I've seen so many times at Walter's on Washington and other venues around Houston. I haven't seen this much integrity in a band since Sonic Youth fused with the infectios melodies of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Metric. I just love this album and I had increddibly high expectations, don't skip a sigle track, every one is fantastic.

Thank You Ume!

Thank you Ume! Phantoms is honestly one of the best albums I've heard in years. You guys bring the ROCK! Saw you play in Denver on 8/6/11 - it was amazing!! Please come back to Colorado soon!

may be sacrilege

Meshing guitar-based hard rock with the raw passion of punk rock and the melodic sophistication of pop, Ume are an Austin, Texas-based trio who've earned a growing following for their relentless touring schedule, explosive performances, and clever but unpretentious music. The story of Ume (pronounced "Ooh-may") begins at a skatepark in West Columbia, Texas in 1995, where 15-year-old Lauren Langner was playing a show with Twelve Blades, a thrashy local punk band. Langner had played piano and oboe...
