iTunes Editors’ Notes

Back in the late '90s, the Ruff Ryders crew was on the verge of blowing up. DMX put them on the map with his chart-topping multiplatinum debut, It's Dark and Hell Is Hot, which dominated the airwaves and introduced the world to their signature synth-driven gangsta party beats (from Dame Grease and Swizz Beatz). Then came Ryde or Die Vol. 1, a hugely popular compilation that showcased their in-house femme fatale Eve and featured her breakout hit "What Ya Want." A few months later, she dropped this album, and the rest is history. While hip-hop's reigning female superstars (Foxy and Kim) were seeing their careers start to decline, Eve took the top spot and ran with it, debuting at No. 1, selling millions of records, and racking up huge singles like "Gotta Man" and "Love Is Blind." More impressively, she wrote all of her own rhymes and shied away from the standard templates of nymphomaniac/compulsive-shopper lyricism. She'd eventually release two more albums before focusing on a burgeoning acting career, but this is the classic that started it all.

Customer Reviews

Eve killed the game with this one. She really stepped out in the music industry and made a name for the Ruff Ryders crew and herself. This is nothing more than a pure classic to the hip-hop genre as a whole and as an album in its own right. To anyone who haven't yet got the chance to listen in, you are all doing your musical repeater's a disservice and it would be quite behoove of oneself to listen up. An album consisting of stories, life lessons; and a philosophical message of self struggle and genuine character building, this is an iPod essential element at its purest. Way to go sister, 5 Mic's!!!!!

What Y'all Want

I downloaded this, the remix is horrible. I can not find the original. Where is it?

This was Eve's best album, by far.....She need to bring it back to this standard, become more real and gritty with it, not so much pop as she is now....The girl has got talent, check her out

Years Active: '90s, '00s, '10s

Eve was one of a new breed of tough, talented, commercially viable female MCs to hit the rap scene during the late '90s. Though she could be sexy when she chose, she wasn't as over the top as Lil' Kim or Foxy Brown, and as part of the Ruff Ryders posse, her production was harder than Da Brat's early work with Jermaine Dupri. In the end, Eve came off as her own person; a strong, no-nonsense street MC who could hold her own with most anyone on the mike, and was finding success on her own terms. She...
