Editors’ Notes

Hoobastank’s 2001 major-label debut (they self-released two prior albums) isn’t flashy or over-the-top — it simply delivers straight-ahead nü-metal with some punch. Hailing from the suburbs of Los Angeles, Hoobastank was part of the same scene that produced Incubus and Linkin Park, and the three bands share some sonic similarities. Featuring strong, choppy guitar riffs, thundering drums, clean production, and tight harmonies, the album has gone on to sell more than a million copies, largely on the popularity of the single “Crawling in the Dark,” which earned considerable radio airplay. The album boasts more than just that huge hit, though. Other highlights include “Running Away,” with its slow build to a full-throated chorus, the melodies of “Ready for You” and “Too Little Too Late,” and the power ballad “To Be With You.” Overall, a promising big-league debut.

Dad says, "I Like It!"

I'm 41 years old. I first heard "Crawling in the Dark" when my daughter left her songs on my computer (Apple of course!) Anyhow, I have since gone on to listening and enjoying both of the Hoobastank albums. If these guys passed me on the street I would have no idea who they are. They just make some darn good music! My favorite song is "Let You Know". Very nice rythmn and guitar work. However I do not like the scream songs as well like "Pieces". Another good one is "Running Away" where they play in 3/4 time (or is it 6/8), impressive! These guys are good, really good. Rivals some of the 70's/80's rock. It's nice to find some current music that is pleasing to "rock" to.

A great debut.

This is a very fine debut. There is so much edge to this album which really sets it apart from The Reason. Much better album than The Reason period.

Great Album

This is a great album. Buy it. I like every single one of the songs, and i bet you will too!

While the heavy alternative sounds of Tool and Alice in Chains were primary influences on Hoobastank's sound, the post-grunge quartet tempered the gloomier elements of such music with a suburban California groove and an eye for accessibility. Formed in the Los Angeles suburb of Agoura Hills in early 1994, the band's earliest members were vocalist Doug Robb and guitarist Dan Estrin, who met each other at a high-school battle of the bands competition. The two chose to join forces, adding bassist Markku...
