iTunes Review

A hip-hop veteran whose pedigree goes back to the early '90s (when he was a member of the Whooliganz), Alchemist has been cranking out top-shelf music for two decades now. An official member of The Soul Assassins, he's also closely affiliated with Mobb Deep, Dilated Peoples, and Eminem, among others. Adept at creating both radio-ready anthems and extra-grimy, underground street bangers alike, he's a solid emcee. But he's known mostly for his exceptional production work, rife with obscure, off-the-beaten-path samples and head-knocking beats. Coming off the success of his recent Gangrene project, he returns with Russian Roulette: an epic, 30-track album that gives us a typically dope mix of left-field instrumentals and rap joints featuring a gang of skilled rhyme technicians, including Schoolboy Q, Danny Brown, FaShawn, and Boldy James. Interspersed with sound clips from random Russian pop records, Rocky IV, and an old Joan Rivers interview with Dolph Lundgren, the album gives listeners a bugged-out but thoroughly enjoyable, Soviet-centered project like only the ALC could deliver.

Great... Definitely different

He wasn't lying when he said its audio art. Not just rap songs strung together. Really great, interesting album. Respect to the Alchemist.

Top 10 Album of the Year if you ask me

It's hard to describe the album but I'll just say it's magical

Sounds nothing like older Alchemist albums. Simple/plain beats. Needs to get his head out of the indie culture crap and go back to making bangers.

Ignoring the coastal feuds that dominated hip-hop for most of the '90s, the Alchemist (born Alan Maman) began his career in L.A. (he grew up in affluent Beverly Hills) and ended up in New York City. As a teenager, as part of the duo the Whooliganz (with Scott Caan, son of James) and the greater rap collective the Soul Assassins (with Cypress Hill, House of Pain, etc.), he released the single "Put Your Handz Up" on Tommy Boy in 1993, though the Whooliganz' debut full-length, Make Way for the W, was...
