Flutist/pianist Anne Drummond may have a modest profile, but she has the respect and admiration of her musician peers as a leader, plus a track record as a sidewoman for Kenny Barron, Stefon Harris, and others. The eclectic Revolving is her third album as a leader. It's a global jazz vision that touches on a contemplative post-bop, earthy Brazilian choro, new age, chamber music, and pastiches of other elements. Drummond keeps a tight leash on the material, never letting her tunes reach the six-minute mark; she creates short but richly detailed tapestries for soloists to be inspired. This is most apparent on the title track and “French Folk.” Pianist Benny Green’s “Magic Beans” takes the music furthest into jazz territory with fine solos from Drummond and Green. Guitarist Vic Juris shines on the surging “Early,” with sly harmonic asides on an electric guitar and a teasing acoustic lead that complements Drummond’s gospel-like piano playing. The album closes with a dancing version of the choro classic “Um a Zero,” proving that Drummond’s sophisticated brand of music doesn't preclude fun for the band and its listeners.
