Full House (Keepnews Collection, Live) [Remastered]

Wes Montgomery often commented to his admirers that he was not satisfied with any of his LPs, with the exception of 1962’s Full House. It’s easy to see why he loved it — it’s a musician’s record, capturing the range of dynamics at work within a quintet. The album was recorded on June 25, 1962, at the Tsubo coffeehouse in Berkeley, California, where Montgomery was joined by a team that would become integral to his music in the years to follow: Paul Chambers on bass, Jimmy Cobb on drums, and Wynton Kelly on piano. For this occasion they are enhanced by the presence of Johnny Griffin on saxophone. Jazz guitarists can be overwhelmed by a backing group but Montgomery needed the push of expert players. His gutsy guitar is every bit the equal of Griffin’s throaty sax, and it is one of the album’s highlights to witness their interaction on “Cariba” and “Full House.” Cobb is an alert drummer, throwing in subtle variations that raise or lower the song by a few inches at crucial points. This is a group effort, but Montgomery is the indisputable star. Listen to “I’ve Grown Accustomed to Her Face” — he doesn’t just play the guitar, he sings it.
