I'm not in the habit of correcting other reviewers, but the other post here is simply flat-out wrong in many respects. First of all, there are only two excerpts on this disc that are purely orchestral [Tks. 2 & 4]. The fact that the other reviewer described them otherwise simply indicates to me a lack of listening (especially when the Elektra scene begins right away with her curse "Sei verflucht!") Second, to describe the last track as her "minimally singing" is to discount the extreme difficulty of the scene - she sings plenty! If the previous reviewer simply meant to imply that this disc could have had some more singing on it, I agree whole-heartedly, as it clocks in at not quite an hour. However, I don't want readers to have the impression that Telarc (or iTunes for that matter) have perpetuated some kind of fraud on the public, since those who have taken the time to listen noticed that Christine Brewer sings these demanding scenes quite well.
Christine Brewer is one of the greatest when it comes to Strass, and Wagner. She and Deborah Voight together are remarkable. I was able to see the Die Frau Ohne Schatten the two did together at Lyric Opera of Chicago.
Apple iTunes does need a BIG slap on the wrist though - the excerpts above, except for the last one, are all orchestral, and that last one only has her minimally singing! This is a Christine Brewer album and they blew it by doing this; you won't get a flavor of what this incredible soprano is capable of doing.
buy it anyway!
