EDITORS’ NOTES

Portland wunderkind Dan Vidmar—better known as Shy Girls—unleashed his spacious, '90s R&B-indebted debut album, Salt, in 2017, seasoning smooth soul and pristine production with an effervescent electronic flourish. “Say You Will” throbs with urgent intimacy, its reverb-soaked vocals and shimmering synths underpinning sharp songwriting, while “Trivial Motion,” with its Prince-esque '80s falsetto and rattling bass, utilizes Vidmar’s knack for crafting sizzling, funk-soaked ballads and slick, simmering slow jams.

About Shy Girls

Shy Girls is the nom de plume of Dan Vidmar, a Portland-based alternative-R&B musician. The native of State College, Pennsylvania headed to the west coast after graduating from Pennsylvania State University and he quickly started working on music professionally once he arrived in Portland. He first garnered attention in 2013 when he placed "Under Attack" on SoundCloud. Soon, the single gained rave reviews and he released the Timeshare EP by the end of the year. During 2014, he opened for Haim on the American tour, as well as Maxwell. The following year brought the mixtape 4WZ and he spent 2016 working on his full-length debut Salt, which appeared in early 2017. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
