iTunes Review
After accepting Christ, hard rocker Mike Farris’ career went south — all the way to New Orleans, in fact. The former lead singer of the Screamin’ Cheetah Wheelies drenched himself in the sanctified sounds of Southern black gospel and Memphis soul and came up with Salvation In Lights (2007), an inspired amalgam of classic hymns and sanctified originals. Pouring sweat and radiating newfound faith, Farris throws himself into these songs like a sinner answering an alter call. It takes nerve to tackle iconic tunes like Sister Rosetta Tharpe’s “Can’t No Grave Hold My Body Down” and Sam Cooke’s “Change Is Gonna Come” — but Farris more than acquits himself with smoldering, drop-to-your-knees performances. From the slinky, Daniel Lanois-like “Devil Don’t Sleep” to the Dixieland horn-inflected “I’m Gonna Get There,” Farris’ self-penned tunes have a sincerity and musical resonance that can’t be faked. Produced by Ferris with Matt Martone, Salvation In Lights veers into Mardi Gras-style celebration on “Sit Down Servant” and serves up guitar-fueled swamp-rock on “Take Me (I’ll Take You There).” Whether he’s wailing to the rafters or savoring a bluesy phrase, Farris convincingly delivers the fervent message of his music.

Long Time Screamin Cheetah Wheelie fan checkin in
I've been a long time Screamin Cheetah Wheelies and after listening to the Discovery Download, I was torn whether or not to buy this album. Because of my love and respect for Mike Farris' music, I spent the $10. Not being a Christian and having little faith, I wasn't familiar with the public domain songs. I was more interested in the songs that Farris wrote himself. For the most part, this is a pretty solid album. The Lonely Road is a great song as is Selah! Selah! Mike's voice is as strong as ever. I'm glad I bought the album and Mike is still as talented as ever. Mike Farris with a horn section is an unbelievable combination. Enjoy the album, pick up Good Night Sun and find some Screamin Cheetah Wheelies. If you like this album, the rest of his work will AMAZE you. Do not miss the oppurtinty to see him live. I've seen him countless times with SCW and solo and each show is amazing. I saw him play an acoustic set supporting Good Night Sun in NJ and it was surreal. I'm giving this album 5 stars b/c frankly, he deserves it.
We havin' us some CHURCH up in here!
Mike Farris sounds like what Steve Winwood has spent a career trying to sound like. This is an honest record by a changed man. There's just gobs of soulful New Orleans flavored gospel blues on every cut. The CCM crowd could stand to hear some of this as a palate cleaner to refresh the generic yawn that much of Christian Pop has become. These songs of faith are the real deal.
No typical Christian genre!
Christian music has hit the skids, until this album hit the streets! Absolutely brilliant renditions of classic gospel, with some original works that hit hard. Get this on Christian radio stations and the humdrum genre will have to keep up! Today, my soul has been fed!
