iTunes Editors’ Notes

Kacey Musgraves’ music has a refreshing honesty that sets her apart from today’s country crowd. Her major-label debut, Same Trailer Different Park, shows off her sharp eye for detail as a songwriter and her winsome delivery as a vocalist. Musgraves knows how to wrap an intriguing story around an ear-snagging hook while capturing the rhythms of small-town life. The album’s lead single, “Merry Go Round,” shows her ability to sing about the downbeat side of heartland America with poetic insight. Even nervier is “Follow Your Arrow,” an upbeat ode to nonconformity that bucks Nashville’s prevailing conservatism. Songs like “Silver Lining” and “Step Off” are notable for their delicate balance of hope and realism; “Stupid” and “It Is What It Is” face up to the hard truths behind romance with remarkable clarity. Musically, Musgraves veers from twangy folk (“My House”) to modern pop (“Back on the Map”) and bluesy country (“Blowin’ Smoke”), uniting her tunes with a cheerfully fearless attitude that makes her boldest statements go down easy. This is smart, superbly crafted, and truthful to its tuneful core.

Kacey Musgraves is the FUTURE of country music!

Kacey is the future of country music. Plain and simple. This record is INCREDIBLE, let alone being the major label debut for a new female. If there was ever a new artist who showed signs of sticking around, it's Kacey Musgraves.

Get ready for Kacey Mania

Being a big fan of the Texas Country music scene, I've known of Kacey for some time now and have been a fan for a long time. It's nice to see her get her big break and have people like Miranda Lambert giving her so much support. I've heard the comparasons to Taylor Swift. Yes, they both write songs. Yes, they are both young women. But Kacey's songwriting is in a whole other universe. Direct, clever, funny, unforgiving, and uncensored. You won't hear a song about "Tears on My Guitar" from Kasey. More like "Now He Has a Limp". The fact that she's a great musician and a great singer is just two more reasons she's miles ahead of seasoned Nashville veterans already. In three months - she'll be the first name mentioned in country music.

A League of Her Own

Country music lovers know two themes are enduring in the genre: the love of Jesus and the wrath of love-done-wrong. While Musgraves encompasses the tried-and-true ideas of the divine and the devil, she preaches in relation to a new target: the self. It's easy for female country singers to focus their inspiration on exterior sources (him and Him), as traditional gender roles may encourage... But what's happening here is completely self-contained and self-fulfilling. It's not filtered through gendered or political lenses as much as it just ... is. As simple as that seems, it is a giant feat... An honest one which is paradoxically beautiful in its roughness. It's balanced disorder. It's anxious contentment. It's life.
