iTunes Review

Compiled by David Byrne as he was delving into two decades' worth of MPB and Tropicália releases, this is an ideal introduction to one of the most thrilling periods in Brazil's popular music scene. These 18 tracks focus on immediately accessible tunes like Chico Buarque's jazzy flute-and-percussion workout "Caçada" and Gal Costa and Maria Bethânia's playful duet "Sonho Meu." Elsewhere, Lô Borges' shimmering, Beatlesque "Equatorial" and Caetano Veloso's bass-driven "Fio Maravilha" (a shout-out to a beloved footballer) show how Brazilian artists incorporated rock influences.

Good Starting Point

I was a big Talking Heads fan and bought this album when it first came out. All the tracks were great but some just floored me. I thought to myself "What culture could produce such beautiful music?" I was so enthralled I moved to Brasil for several years. This album is just the tip of the iceberg my friends but you must start somewhere.

Super collection

This is a great compilation of songs - generally, I'd characterize it as mellow, with a few upbeat songs thrown in, a very good CD for personal listening. It's not a party CD - doesn't have any tracks which I'd consider to be like, booty-shakers. But the strength of this compilation is that it really showcases some of the great legendary voices of Brazilian popular music. In my opinion, the best tracks are "Ponta de Lanca" (very funky) and "Caramba!" by Jorge Ben, "Sonho Meu" (warm and lilting) with Gal Costa, and "San Vicente" sung by Milton Nascimento. The vocals on these tracks are surreal, even though the sound quality could be better. Haven't checked out any of the other Beleza Tropical compilations (guess they're not available here on iTunes), but I'm sure they'd be worth a shot, too. The tracks I mentioned are definitely worth buying. Listen to them when you need to feel warm inside.

hey, a little backround on this, david byrne (of talking heads fame) went down to Brazil and compiled some of his favorite local brazlian music. what comes out is a killer collection that displays a wide spectrum of brazilian music.
