Egberto Gismonti celebrates Brasilia

Egberto Gismonti, the Brazilian composer, guitarist and pianist graces us with a fine double 'album' featuring on two 'sides' a quartet recorded in the studio and on two sides solo recorded live. Influenced by Heitor Villa-Lobos, his works reflect the musical diversity of Brazil. From the Amazon Indians' batuque to the Carioca samba and choro, through the Northeastern frevo, baião, and forró, Gismonti captures the true essence of the Brazilian soul in a way that is primitive, yet sophisticated, and reflects it through his personal vision, elaborated by years of classic training and literacy in a wealth of musical languages in which jazz plays a significant role.
Quartet:
Egberto Gismonti - 10 string guitar, super 8 guitar, Indian organ, piano, voice
Mauro Senise - soprano saxophone, alto saxophone, flute (Disc One)
Zeca Assumpção - bass (Disc One)
Nene - drums, percussion (Disc One)
This album is captivating, beautifully played by all and recorded as one has come to expect from ECM. The quartet set veers from excellent lyrical jazz playing (maracatu), to some free expressions in Frevo, to tight polyrythms of Loro. The solo side celebrates the many indian, tribal, rural influences of his home country. A varied experience to be sure; one I have enjoyed many times. The musicianship is full of passion and skill, top rate. highly recommended.
