Editors’ Notes

Sapphire is an album of unusual passion, even by Teena Marie’s standards. Released late in her career, it can be seen as an artistically successful attempt to blend contemporary hip-hop with her trademark brand of steamy soul. Marie proves her sure grasp of hypnotic grooves and sensual lyricism on smoldering jams like “Ooh Wee,” “Somebody Just Like You” and “Ecstasy.” On “Make it Hot” and “Ladies Choice,” she recalls the teasing funk that made her ‘80s hits like “Square Biz” so influential. Smokey Robinson’s duet vocals on “God Has Created” and “Cruise Control” add to the album’s lushly romantic mood. The most devastating track here is “You Blow Me Away,” an incandescent tribute to Teena’s mentor Rick James, who passed away in 2004. Marie pours out her sense of loss and longing on this tune, ending with a confession of pure love. Nearly as affecting is “Resilient (Sapphire),” a poetic meditation on mortality sung with daughter Alia Rose. Sapphire is one of the neglected gems in Marie’s catalog, mature in conception but filled with youthful fire.

Luv it!!

This is the Tee we all know and love.

Sapphire--Bling Bling

I've been waiting for ya Lady Tee and you know what they say, good things come to those who wait... Our ears can hear Teena stand alone, pipe it with the rappers, and smooth it out with her daughter on the track Resilient (Sapphire), like mother like daughter, hopefully she's getting ready to give our younger generation some soul....You feel the love Teena has for Rick James in Romantica and You Blow Me Away, although he's not physically here, he's in her soul and she lets us feel it...Although hurricane Katrina washed away all of my Teena Marie albums and cd's they will be replaced and now I have another too add to it....Thank You for this smooth, soulful, heartfelt cd, keep them coming...

Lady T gets better with time!

I think it's odd that some of the reviews here are negative for Teena Marie's new album. I mean, did you guys listen to it? I think the album is amazing and Teena's voice sounds better than ever. Her music is fresh, yet retro! She's working the synthasizers and the bass. Her harmonies are tight and her lyrics are classic Teena. It my not sound like "Starchild" or "Naked To The World", but she has to evolve like every artist has to evolve. Every review I've read for the album so far has been awesome. If you haven't heard this album yet, give it a listen. If you have and didn't like it, listen again.....because I really think you've missed something!

No white artist sang R&B more convincingly than Teena Marie, whose big, robust vocals were so black-sounding that when she was starting out, some listeners wondered if she was a light-skinned African-American. Marie grew up in west Los Angeles in a neighborhood that was nicknamed "Venice Harlem" because of its heavy black population. The singer/songwriter/producer was in her early twenties when, around 1977, she landed a job at Motown Records. It was at Motown that she met her mentor and paramour-to-be,...
