I'd never heard of this band before but it seems to have dual personalities of indie band and electronic collective. any case, this CD is an example of the latter, featuring a very skillful blending of electronic and acoustic instruments in mostly short instrumental pieces. Bell-like percussion instruments such as vibraphone and glockenspiel create an intimate and icy ambience alongside longing and often warm bass drones. Despite the minimalist feel there is a great deal of variety generated by the soloistic treatment of the acoustic instruments, which frequently play off of one another in a manner more proper to "classical" composition. I'm curious to see the film this soundtrack accompanies. I assume the fact that this is a sountrack is responsible for many of the tracks being short...The only thing that would improve this album would be to extend many of these tracks so that they can more easily stand alone. In any case, it's definitely worth purchasing.

Formed near Munich as a post-hardcore band, the Notwist gradually began to embrace a fusion of classic '80s indie pop songwriting and scruffy electronic backings indebted to Oval and Autechre. The quartet comprises brothers Markus and Micha Acher (on vocals/guitar and bass, respectively) plus programmer/keyboard player Martin Gretschmann and drummer Martin Messerschmid. Their self-titled 1989 debut and 1992's Nook were rough-and-tumble punk LPs. Third album 12 marked the group's first flirtation...
