Album Review

Dan Cummins makes his major-label debut with Revenge Is Near, a collection of observational wit and black humor that finds him catering to the post-Dane Cook world. Yes, the rules have changed since Dane Cook returned comedy to the top of the Billboard charts, and Cummins adjusts his approach accordingly, delivering risqué punch lines that touch upon pop culture, relationships, and everyday life. His laid-back style borders on deadpan, allowing Revenge Is Near to move along at a comfortable, manageable speed. Absent are the kinetic sound effects and audible sweat of his contemporaries; in their place is a smart-ass, stationary comedian who wants you to laugh at his jokes, not his antics. Not all of Cummins' punch lines pack the same power — the Chuck Norris joke is at least two years too late, and the pony joke simply isn't funny — but the bulk of this album is pretty amusing stuff, especially during the second half.

Perfect and his own voice

Nothing compares to Dan Cummins for subtle, dark comedy. Stop comparing every comic to other comics, he is in a league of his own and will stay there as long as he never takes a sidekick role of a sitcom. Great stuff if you have listened to comedy before.

Dane Cook, Seriously?

Dan Cummins is nothing like Dane Cook, Dan is funny. Comparing Dan to Dane Cook is like comparing Bud light to a good micro-brew. Sure the majority of people find Cooks animated stage appearance satifying, but only because they lack the confidence to try something with more bite, more character. I would gladly recommend anyone to see Dan Cummins in person and to buy his CD. You'll have a great time!

More than the sum of his influences...

Look no further than iTunes' Top 10 comedy albums for the short list of Dan Cummins' influences - You can very clearly hear cadence similarities to Dane Cook, and both cadence AND joke structure similarities to Mitch Hedburg. Fortunately, his writing is very clever, original, and funny enough that you do not end up feeling that he's stealing what works; Just borrowing some timing rhythms (Though to be fair, the "That joke is called..." motif IS what this writer will assume is a Hedburg homage). This album captures a solid talent who has the art of delivery down, and is trying to find his own voice. If he does become the "next big thing," it will be on the merits of his material, which the listener will happily find many of on REVENGE IS NEAR. "Chocolate Squirrelador" and "Bad Cobra" are particular standouts. If you like Mitch and/or Dane, Dan should be next on your comedy playlist.
