EDITORS’ NOTES

Rugged Atlanta rap gets a new dynamic duo on a murky, minimal EP that brings out the best in its precocious players. For producer Metro Boomin—in-demand architect of Drake and Future’s irrepressible “Jumpman”—it’s a chance to darken his palette with foreboding bells (“No Heart”) and muffled 808s (“Feel It”). And then there’s 21 Savage: dabbling with playful, raspy boasts (“Mad High”) while never losing the hard-edged authenticity of a true trap king.

About 21 Savage

An Atlanta rapper who kicked off his career with the crew Slaughtergang, MC 21 Savage hit as a solo artist with his 2014 single "Picky." Born Shayaa Joseph, he formed Slaughtergang with fellow Atlanta rapper Lotto Savage. "Picky" launched his solo career in 2014, then his debut mixtape, The Slaughter Tape, dropped in 2015. The Free Guwop EP with Sonny Digital landed that same year, as did a second solo mixtape, Slaughter King. In 2016 he joined Metro Boomin for the collaborative LP Savage Mode. ~ David Jeffries
