Sweetest voice, purest tone

Jane Monheit has got to have the sweetest voice ever. I was pretty blown away when I first heard "Taking a chance on Love". Her pure tone and timbre is a refreshing change from the huskiness many have come to associate with jazz. I can just hear that head tone resonating in her recordings. Definitely a power vocalist.

Can't Get Enough of This Voice...

I keep "The Folks Who Live On The Hill" on repeat... just because in just this one song, you GET her. Jane has some amazing pipes, impressive range and control, and above all, a deep understanding of the importance of dynamics. She is just as powerful singing softly (like on "Folks...") as she is belting grandiose notes (like on "Over The Rainbow"... dare I say almost as amazing as Patti LaBelle's version). I'm a little disheartened by some jazz purists who feel she tends to embellish her renditions of classics.... to them, I say, get over it... She makes the songs her own by putting a more exciting spin on convention, by hitting the songs with a tinge of contemporary soul and pop. What's wrong with that? If it gets us--the younger generation--interested in Jazz and the old standards... I say hooray! And by the way, thank you, Jane. Even with a nasty cough, you still sounded amazing LIVE!

Jane Monheit, where have you been? I honestly can't believe why Jane Monheit's music in not on the daily most downloaded music list. This rising star has tremendous talent, a silky voice that can lift anyone's spirit, and drop dead gorgeous! My favorite songs are: I Wish You Love, Over the Rainbow, and I won't Dance.

At the tender age of 20, New York vocalist Jane Monheit was the first runner-up in the 1998 Thelonious Monk Institute vocal competition, winning a $10,000 scholarship to further her musical education. Judges couldn't exactly place her sound, which blended natural elegance with a potent yet impressively controlled presentation, and by 2000, Monheit had joined Diana Krall as one of the most highly touted female talents in jazz. That May she signed to N-Coded and released her debut, Never Never Land....
