The Cosmos Rocks (Bonus Track Version)
Queen + Paul Rodgers

Anyone remotely familiar with the music of Queen understands that filling the shoes of the late, great Freddie Mercury is pretty much impossible. Mercury had arguably the most vocal control and dynamic range of any classic rock 'n' roll singer. But to be fair you can't approach listening to The Cosmos Rocks expecting the Free/Bad Company frontman Paul Rodgers to replace Mercury. And in fact, listening to this album it's obvious that Queen never intended to replace him. Instead, the band has crafted songs to fit with Rodgers' own unique voice and it definitely works. Brian May and Roger Taylor import their glammy, triumphant, stadium rock leaving plenty of loosened room for Rodgers to get his signature boogie on — and their chemistry blends like chocolate and peanut butter. Rodgers' vocals sound as young as they did on Free's "All Right Now" or Bad Company's "Ready For Love" and Queen still rocks as hard as they ever did, even getting their flawless, airtight harmonies soaring on songs like "Still Burnin'" and especially on the intro to "Call Me" which pulls from the taut power pop that Queen played on The Game and on 1980's Flash Gordon soundtrack.
New and Classic and Still Evolving!
Cosmos Rockin' ...a classic light hearted rock tune leaves you singing along and wondering why. Time to Shine ...good tune, inspirational. Still Burnin' ...good but not great, but you wont skip it. Small ...the first absolute gem on the album, all the elements of these artists that come together shine on this one. Warboys ...a real rocker with a great message, another stud of a track. We Believe ...another inspirational "Queen" type track. Call Me ...Freddie would have had fun on this one, I'll stop short of calling this a Crazy Little Thing type tune. Voodoo ...classic Paul Rodgers blues type tune, but Brian sells it, this is a band, a really good band. not just some guys who happen to be on the same album. Some Things That Glitter ...This is a Made In Heaven album type tune, it could fit there. Through the Night ...a powerfully sad blues-ish song, Paul take his voice to different areas here, the band is tight on this one. Say It's Not True ...Roger, Brian, and Paul on vocals, powerful song that gets more powerful as it goes. Surf's up School's Out ...strange tune, a mundane hypnotic strange tune. Runaway ...masterful cover that really is blowing my mind. The Show Must Go On ...THE SHOW MUST GO ON! TO ANYONE WHO WOULD CRITICIZE THIS AS "NOT QUEEN" KEEP IN MIND THAT QUEEN WERE NEVER THE SAME FROM ALBUM TO ALBUM, NO TWO WERE ALIKE ... THIS IS A GREAT THING.
I hear a lot of Paul Rodgers on this album, not much Queen. I guess it's not surprising as the irreplaceable Freddie is no longer with us and John Deacon is smart enough to take a pass on whatever this is. Basically, you have 1/2 of Queen + Paul Rodgers. I agree with other reviewers that as a Bad Company album this isn't bad, but it sounds like no other Queen album and I've been a long time fan. I was OK with the tour, the live album and CD, but I really think it's time for Brian and Roger to let go of the Queen moniker and just form a new band with Rodgers. A disappointment.
I miss Freddie...
I feel as if people are a little to eager to welcome back Queen... I isn't bad persay, but I can't listen to it becuase all it makes me think of is how extraordinary Freddie Mercury was.
