No one was put into a backup role in the Spice Girls, which gave credence to the group’s philosophy of Girl Power. On their 1996 debut, all five singers get a chance to display their vocal personalities in teamwork-driven dance tunes like “Wannabe” and “Love Thing.” On “Say You’ll Be There” and “Something Kinda Funny,” hip-hop’s raucous energy blends with pop’s shiny hooks and club music’s dance beats—the perfect setting for an all-inclusive party in which female friendship and nonstop fun take precedence over romantic torment.
