A hidden masterpiece!

This is one of those ensembles of giants of jazz that really works, and amazingly well, and I would probably include it on my own "Desert Island" ten. In fact, I have never understood why Margueritte has not become a jazz classic in its own right - maybe because this album was so hard to find for so many years. (It was on my list of obscure great records that I would always hunt for in used record shops whenever traveling, and only found it again a few years ago when it was reissued as a cd.) What is really enjoyable here, and Margueritte is the best example, is the interplay between the Walcott and Abercrombie sitar and guitar, supported by the great bass of Dave Holland (who would make any artist sound two levels better than usual) and Jack DeJohnette.

Collin Walcott was one of the first sitar players to play jazz. As a member of Oregon, Walcott's flexibility, interest in different cultures, and ability to play not only sitar but tabla and other percussion instruments made him a very valuable musician.
