The primal Scream Bloody Gore is where thrash first mutates into death metal. Aside from the drums, beaten to a bloody pulp by Chris Reifert, Death founder Chuck Schuldiner sings, plays, and writes everything. Notice how the technical chops that would gradually creep into the genre are downplayed. On “Regurgitated Guts” and “Zombie Ritual,” Death instead rely on furious blunt force to express Schuldiner’s darkest obsessions: horror flicks, psychopathy, and every shade of gore-porn imaginable. Metal would never be the same.
