After years of issuing solid, mind-melting studio albums that deserved their comparisons to Hawkwind, NYC’s White Hills picked up and departed for Bethesda, Wales, and the Snowdonia National Forest. The core duo of singer/guitarist Dave W and singer/bassist Ego Sensation hired producer David Wrench (Caribou, FKA Twigs) to streamline their approach until it yielded something new. The band that Jim Jarmusch highlighted in his vampire film Only Lovers Left Alive still craft superior psychedelia; witness the nearly nine minutes of “Lead the Way” and the killer “We Are What You Are.” But shorter tunes like “No Will” and “Wanderlust” provide new puzzles of psychedelic origin.
