Album Review

Absentstar hail from Chicago, and their spin on anthemic British arena rock — equal parts U2, Verve, and Coldplay — does have a touch of plainspoken Midwestern spirit on their 2008 debut, Sea Trials. They have the grand, sweeping sound common to this kind of British rock (lots of soaring melodies, echoing guitars, and cavernous drums), but they're not pompous; they're down to earth, which gives them an everyday appeal. They're also fortunate enough to have Dan Wilson, the singer/songwriter behind the very good post-alt-pop combo Semisonic, as their producer on Sea Trials, as he helps sharpen the arrangements to emphasize melody without losing their dramatic flair. The end result may still have a few too many surface traces of their influences, but there's enough melodic craft and sonic might to make this a promising debut.

Like Reuniting With Your Best Friend

This album can pick you up, make your heart ache, comfort and commiserate, and leave you wishing for more time to spend with it. You won’t want to stop listening. This is a worthy album from an exceptionally worthy band. I love AbsentStar and am incredibly pleased with this album.

a must buy album, and a must see band

These guys are beyond talented... I saw them open up for third eye blind at my university and couldn't have been more pleased with their performance. The stage presence is intense and captivating. They just also seem to be real down-to-earth guys. They were open to meet and talk to the students who attended the concert and were really sweet. I recently bought this album and there isnt a song on it that i'm not in love with. The lyrics are so pure and the talent of each member jumps out of your speakers and makes it impossible not to notice. I recommend buying this album and experiencing these guys live if you get the chance. It's a show you will not soon foget.

I've seen these guys several times live and they never dissapoint. Tons of energy a great stage presence. With the release of this album it won't take long before everyone knows who they are. Don't miss out on the best new band of the year!!

Formed: 2005 in Chicago, IL

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '00s

Combining a bit of Brit-pop's feel with good old American rock & roll, Chicago's powerful Absentstar landed their major-label deal the old-fashioned way: by releasing their own album and then playing any and every gig they could. With a trail of broken-up bands behind them, Derek Ingersoll (vocals), Andy Dixon (guitars), Marshall Hanbury, Jr. (guitars), Noel Arnim (bass), and Heath Hamilton (drums) came together as Absentstar in 2005. All the members were soon convinced that this new band was going...
