Editors’ Notes

This 18-track release features both the duo's self-titled 1968 debut album and its follow-up, 1969's Contact. Widely ignored during their initial existence from 1967-1969 (though Jimi Hendrix recorded with them), Silver Apples have become recognized as one of the most innovative and experimental bands of their era by their fans in Spacemen 3, Stereolab, Portishead, and countless other electronic-based groups. The duo's interest in oscillators led to their unusual sound and the name of their first single, " Oscillations," which is also the leadoff track of their debut album. The sound loops and unusual rhythms were unique in the late '60s. In modern times, the melodies behind "Program," "Velvet Cave," and "I Have Known Love" shine through what now sounds like artful but not offputting arrangements of vocals, drums, and oscillators (with a little banjo poking through a few later tracks). Even an experimental piece like "Dust" now has a companion in the later works of Scott Walker. The first album was recorded to four-track, while the second album was worked over at Decca Records' 24-track studio in Los Angeles under stricter time constraints.

Customer Reviews

Revolutionary Record that "should be played to children as part of their history lessons"

This NYC duo from the late '60s used up to nine audio oscillators in their recordings and live performances. This record is way ahead of it's time! Experimental electronic music that has had an impact on krautrock of the 1970s and underground dance music to this day. In 2006 Optimo (Scottish DJ duo) Presents Psych Out mix included Oscillations. Lovefingers is my favorite track. You need this record.

Art Dayglo

Psilocyber-space: black lighted orange dayglo reflecting on metallic silver album cover. Vibrations of joy contained within.

One of the most important albums ever made

Get it. Play it. Love it. Appreciate the sheer genuis of this album that was recorded decades ahead of it's time. Brilliant. Simply brilliant.

Decades after their brief yet influential career first ground to a sudden and mysterious halt, the Silver Apples remain one of pop music's true enigmas: a surreal, almost unprecedented duo, their music explored interstellar drones and hums, pulsing rhythms, and electronically generated melodies years before similar ideas were adopted in the work of acolytes ranging from Suicide to Spacemen 3 to Laika. The Silver Apples formed in New York in 1967 and comprised percussionist Danny Taylor and lead vocalist...
