Substance Seeker

What happened here? I'm a long-time Matis fan, but I can't listen to this album. There are a few catchy pop beats to be found (by the way, I don't listen to Matisyahu for catchy pop beats), but they are quickly lost in the overly-produced, synthesized vocals. And the lyrical content has lost the power of past albums.

Artistic growth is expected—nobody wants to hear the same album with each new release. But Matis has gone completely pop. It's such a dramatic departure that if this were the first album I'd ever heard from him, I'd likely write him off. And that's a complete shame for someone who has released some incredible material in the past.

I'm sure this album will find an audience, but long-time fans may feel the need to "shake off the dust" of this less than stellar effort.

Always dope.

Not for the "original" fan

Theres a few catchy songs on here. Sounds like a "pop" album to me. Pretty disappointed. I'll give it a few more tries but I want the old Reggae Matis back. If you compare this album with his older albums you'll hear the difference.

Here was a Hasidic Jew — dressed in a black suit with a broad-brimmed black hat worn over a yarmulke, and sporting a full, untrimmed beard — who nevertheless performed toasting raps about the glories of traditional Judaism over reggae beats in a dancehall style directly from Jamaica. Moreover, he punctuated his performances with stage diving. It may have seemed...
