Album Review
In his initial solo recordings, Gregg Allman tried for a more eclectic pop approach than the Southern blues-rock of his day job with the Allman Brothers Band. His later solo work, done during breaks in the Brothers' career, was much closer to the traditional ABB sound. On his first solo album since the Allmans' reformation in 1989, he again makes what is essentially an Allman Brothers Band record without the other members, except new guitarist Jack Pearson, whose Duane Allman/Dickey Betts-style slide work is all over the disc. Allman signals the same-but-different approach by opening the album with an "unplugged" version of the Allmans' signature song, "Whipping Post," and though he adds horns to some tracks for a more R&B feel, the rest of the album finds him growling through standard-issue blues-rock, some of the songs originals, some covers, among them an excellent version of "Dark End of the Street" and an arrangement of John Hiatt's "Memphis in the Meantime" that makes it sound like a Betts country-rocker. Recovering from personnel changes, the Allman Brothers Band didn't release an album in 1997; this record should help tide their fans over.

Another Classic
If you're more into the Greg lead songs with the the Allman Brothers you'll love this album. The songs are all have good riffs and his voice is right on. I've seen him and the Brothers live recently and he's better then ever.
Gregg Allman, classic
First, look no further than the first track, Whippin' Post, which is a bluesy and what his website calls it "swampy". Nobody thought he couldn't pulled this off, but he did, and succedded. House of Blues is a very good track, and it features his bluesy side. Silence Ain't Golden Anymore is also a solid tune, which is another slow song. Rendezvous With the Blues is OK, but unless you're a true Gregg Allman fan, I wouldn't buy it. Neighbor, Neighbor is a song that is an excellent song that I listen to over and over. Memphis in the Meantime is also a very good song. Overall if you're a real Gregg fan, I'd buy the whole thing, but if you like some of his stuff, I'd buy Whippin' Post, House of Blues, Memphis in the Meantime, and that'd be it. If you like those songs, then buy the whole album.
A Must For Gregg & Blues Fans
Don't let my nickname fool you. Even if you are a fan of another band but dig Greggs voice over the years then you will dig this cd. With the exception of one or two of the tracks that I don't personally care for, the rest of the cd is great. He's one of the best white blues singers around and shows it here. That funky (swampy as it was put) version of Whippin Post is awesome as is Redezvous With The Blues and Memphis In The Meantime. If your expecting to rock out on this you're not. But if you're into the blues & Gregg sounds, then you'll dig it. It's worth the money in my opinion. Peace.
