Ballad of Obie, You See

That's what I'm talkin' about Obie, that's how you rip it up. This guy is one of the NICEST cats commin' stright out of the D. You take some BIG and some Pac and mix um up in a pot sprinkle a EMINEM on top what do you got? OBIE TRICE son! what!

Best of 2006

After a weak beginning to the year (only 2-3 good albums), Obie has led a relatively strong August. The 1st half of the album is more street, while the 2nd half is more of a crossover attempt, which Obie does well. Obie keeps the album fresh throughout with excellent lyricism and several flows. On most of the beginning songs, his flow is slow but agressive over dark beats. On songs like 'Jamacain Girl' and 'Out of State' Obie raps quickly over a fast beat. More impressively, on songs like 'Lay Down' he raps fast over a slower beat and makes it work smoothly. Towards the more pop-oriented middle/end, he goes with a more laid back, aesthetic flow. The best songs are 'Snitch' (great Akon beat & hook w/ Obie's rapping), 'Wake Up' (the most street song I've heard in YEARS), and 'Obie Story' (one of the realest songs I've EVER heard). Overall, this is probably the best album of the year so far, as of early September. Obie Trice is POSSIBLY the BEST RAPPER in the game now - not counting classic rappers like Nas, Method Man, and Ice Cube that still rap - Obie's the best of the new generation rappers (50 Cent, Lil' Wayne, T.I., Ludacris, The Game, Kanye West). If not, he's certainly THE MOST UNDERRATED. If it gets enough publicity, this album may be considered a classic in a few years, it definitely deserves that status. I'm very dissapointed that this is never played on the radio - songs like 'Snitch,' 'Cry Now,' 'Jamacain Girl,' and 'All of My Life' are all good songs that are radio-friendly - better than any of the crap that played now too.

Born: November 14, 1977 in Detroit, MI

Genre: Hip-Hop/Rap

Years Active: '00s, '10s

Obie Trice went from no one to someone in the rap world quickly when Eminem signed him to Shady Records and executive produced his debut. Born on the west side of Detroit in the Schoolcraft and Greenfield area, Trice began his rap career humbly. He dropped out of Cooley High School in the early '90s and began making ends meet, which wasn't too easy in the cold, abandoned streets of Detroit. His turning point came in 1998 with the birth of his daughter, Kobie. Shortly afterward, he took note of Eminem's...
