With 1982's The Secret of N.I.M.H., Jerry Goldsmith made his first foray into animated film — he later admitted that the concept proved so foreign to his sensibilities that in the end he approached the project like a live-action feature, composing the same kinds of extended themes and employing the same sort of structural development that typifies so much of his early-'80s output. Listeners raised on a steady diet of post-Little Mermaid Disney soundtracks may have no idea what to make of The Secret of N.I.M.H., but Goldsmith enthusiasts will discover much to savor here. Its sweeping melodies and vivid choral passages are well-matched to the fantasy genre, buoyed by Goldsmith's artful pacing and unerring flair for the dramatic. Most noteworthy is "Flying Dreams," written by Goldsmith but performed by underrated American pop maestro Paul Williams.
Jerry Goldsmith's First Animation Masterpiece
For this Don Bluth animated miracle of the 80s, Jerry Goldsmith was brought on board to compose an impressionistic and intelligent musical score. The emotion that the music provides enhances the movie to a dramatic and powerful experience. Lyricist Paul Williams provided words for the song Flying Dreams, a simple theme that Goldsmith bases this opus on. The National Philharmonic backed up by a large chorus plays the music beautifully on this reissue from Varese Sarabande Records. You probably will never hear action music like Allergic Reaction and The Tractor in another animated motion picture again. Highly Recommended.
A masterful and overlooked Goldsmith score.
It's amazing to me how many scores to family films are overlooked. Goldsmith's score to this film keeps in that tradition. Many other of Don Bluth's animated films hold to this too, such as The Land Before Time and An American Tail. The Secret of NIHM is a wonderfully powerful and masterful piece of music. It does a magnificent job of drawing you into the movie emotionally and adds so much tension, awe, and mystery to the film. This score was previously a little difficult to find. Kudos to Apple for posting it on iTunes. Definitely a must for Goldsmith fans.
Goldsmith is Pure Gold
I love the movie alot even when I was a kid, I liked the actor Dom De Luise who does Jeremy the crow. The music is so emotional when the tractor comes closer to the stone in the garden that it almost kills Timmy. The most emotional part in the movie is when Mrs. Brisby cries for almost losing her kids and she moves her house under the stone. Also Flying Dreams Lullaby is a very good song because I cry every time when I hear that song. Goldsmith does a very good job with the music. "Courage of the heart is very rare, the stone has a power when it's there." This album is worth owning.
