Album Review

Southworth's sophomore effort is a bit easier to swallow, musically speaking; working with producer Hawksley Workman seems to have tamed a lot of the quirkier elements of Southworth's style. Where Mars Pennsylvania spent a lot of time in a Kurt Weill-like world, Sedona Arizona spends a lot of time in the '60s and '70s, with beautifully constructed pop occasionally colliding with a funk undertow. Southworth still takes on the role of the outsider and milks his androgyny on the album's big hit single, "Cute Girls Gay Guys."

Customer Reviews

Greatest. Albums. Of. All Time.

A sad, funny, bitter, joyful, angry, loving, hating life-changer of a record. The combo of Hawksley and John is a match made in quirk-pop heaven. If you don't already own a John Southworth record, this is some his most emotionally extreme yet intimate and utterly rewarding work. Consider it John's "Greetings from L.A." or "Kid A" or "Nebraska", if you will.
