iTunes Review

Not to be confused with the '60s African psychedelic band by the same name, this Witch plays fuzzed-out doom metal with a warm mix that sounds like it came off a tube-driven mixing board from the early '70s. Fans of Dinosaur Jr. may already be aware that this band was founded by J Mascis and his longtime friend Dave Sweetapple (of the rock band Sweet Apple). With Mascis returning to the drum kit, the duo forms a towering yet dynamic rhythm section, similar to that of Saint Vitus or Pentagram. Over this, Kyle Thomas of the psychedelic folk band Feathers plays guitar and sings. In the opening “Seer,” he makes his amp squeal like a demonic pig as Mascis drums with a skull-crushing heaviness that inadvertently explains his earthshaking approach to guitar. The outstanding “Soul of Fire” puts Sweetapple’s hard-throttled bass runs at the forefront as Thomas unravels a flurry of buzzing riffs alongside his androgynously sinister croon. “Isadora” gently lands the band's spacecraft on Black Sabbath’s Planet Caravan before launching into intergalactic battle.

Longtime friends J Mascis of Dinosaur Jr. and Dave Sweetapple had always wanted a "real" hard rock band, so they asked Asa Irons and Kyle Thomas, both members of New England avant folk collective Feathers, to...
