Christian pop-rock doesn’t get much smarter or more beguiling than Seize the Day, the sophomore album by Maryland trio Carousel Rogues. Lead singer/songwriter Caitlin Nethery Anselmo tempers a Leigh Nash–like sweetness with a playful edge worthy of The Cardigans or No Doubt. Tunes like “A Star Is Never Bored,” “Cut Me Cleanly,” and “Sugar Rose” are lyrically witty and gorgeously melodic; they're lent extra sparkle by Ben Shive’s inspired daubs of synths and strings. “Strong Trees” and the title track touch on faith without preachiness. Seize the Day is a pop gem well worth grabbing.
