Album Review

The debut release from Sonogram's Todd Gautreau, Crushed Stars cast dreamy shadows across their brand of sleepy-eyed indie pop. With darting guitar lines caressing lazy melodies and hushed vocals, Gautreau's songs speak of the frustrations and ennui of everyday life with quiet intensity. His Robert Smith-ish vocals aside, the clean picked electric guitar and warm keyboards create solemnly evasive moods that are multiplied across the album's 13 tracks. Where most of the tracks exist with minimal ornamentation and chilly atmospherics, the occasional use of steady pounding percussion or squirming basslines in tracks like "Exit Wound" and Walkabout add a hypnotic, almost tribal quality to the weary elegance of the arrangements. Most of all, Self Navigation provides the impetus to take the edge off most any day.
