Editors’ Notes

Three-time GRAMMY®-nominated drummer John Hollenbeck is one of today’s preeminent jazz composers and arrangers thanks to his work in The Claudia Quintet and elsewhere. Here, on the quintet’s seventh album, Hollenbeck keeps blending beautifully textured haiku-like melodies with more effusive gambits, which are often tricky and sometimes playful. As always, this duality works well; “September 29th, 1936 ‘Me Warn You’” is a jittery piece that adapts elements of a FDR speech, complemented by the equally interesting but graceful “September 25th Somber Blanket.” (It’s worth noting that the dates attached to each song title refer to its inception or finish date in the month of September, which Hollenbeck traditionally sets aside for composing.) In his liner notes, Hollenbeck adds that he’s finally gotten to the point as a composer where he can write music that players learn by ear rather than from a stack of sheet music; while this may be the case, there's no dropoff in the sublime, well-ordered music that The Claudia Quintet creates.

New Claudia Quintet

I had the privilege of seeing Claudia Quintet perform these songs last year and was blown away. A great album!!!

Consistently wonderful

The Claudia Quintet's new record is yet another in a long line up of consistently creative efforts. Their sound is completely their own, the mark of any good music. Hollenbeck's compositions (as always) are totally exciting in their harmonic and textural adventurousness, and the rest of the ensemble's execution of it is flawless and muscular. Bravo!

Hollenbeck, accordionist Ted Reichman, and bassist Reuben Radding, performing as the Refuseniks, had the gig for about a year, but Radding abandoned ship to move to Montana -- so, nix on the Refuseniks. Rather than bid adieu to,...
