iTunes Review

By turns mournful, defiant and forgiving, Neko Case secures her stature as Queen of Alt-Country on Furnace Room Lullaby. Her sophomore album more than lived up to the promise shown on her debut album The Virginian — this time, her gutsy vocals are matched by a fully-realized songwriting talent. Case spreads her wings as a honky-tonk angel on such bruised-up ballads as “Twist the Knife,” “We’ve Never Met,” and “Bought and Sold.” Not all is torment though – “No Need to Cry” is a sensuous torch number, delivered with a honeyed caress and she reaches the opposite extreme on “Porchlight,” the very definition of a high ‘n’ lonesome tune. When Case grabs hold of an upbeat stomper, she’s a force of nature, as the likes of “Mood to Burn Bridges” and “Whip the Blanket” show. Most affecting of all is “Thrice All American,” a bittersweet salute to the faded virtues of her Tacoma, Washington home. Case gets sturdy support from the Boyfriends, a flexible cast of players including roots-rock guitar hero Evan Johns and sterling steel guitarist Bob Egan, but ultimately it's the brilliance of her performances that make this an uplifting experience.

magnificent album

I listened to Neko Case exclusively as we drove from california through oregon and into washington two summers ago and it was one of the greatest expierences of my life. this woman and her music is like the soundtrack to my soul. people that dont get her, like my wife, don't understand the power of her music. Its haunting, and beautiful and searing and hurtful and fragile yet strong.. please, if you're in doubt of this artist dont be. we fans vouch for Neko, try her out you won't be dissapointed. I promise.

I bought this on a whim years ago!! It is in my top ten favorite albums. Her voice is so lush and heart rending. This album made me a fan for life. I cant say enough. You can hear every emotion distinct and present. He voice is like HDTV,so clear and defind.Once you hear it you will not be able to listen to the Britney Spears mush of the world.

I'm not surprised it's so awesome

At first listen, I honestly didn't like Neko Case. I had been a fan of the New Pornographers, and listening to her solo work seemed a bit odd for me. I had never ever listened to any form of country before, but I figured I'd try it out. Now I truly can't go without any of the songs she sings. Her voice is so unique and so haunting, and it's so inspiring. My favorite tracks from this release are "Set Out Running" and "Furnace Room Lullaby", but they are all fantastic songs, and any songs that you buy you will completely love them.

She left her parents at age 15, and three years later she started playing drums for several bands on the Northwest's punk rock scene.
