Album Review

It's hard to call Gary Allan anything other than a journeyman, a singer raised in hard country who has always found his road a little bit hard to travel. Hits have come, but toward the back end of the 2000s, roughly ten years after he had his commercial breakthrough; the hits started to dwindle and he responded by getting a little bit leaner and rocking a little bit harder. All those moves pay off on Set You Free, his ninth album and one where all of his past is present in his assured professionalism. Allan isn't trying much new here, but he whittles away any lingering impressions of confessional songwriting apparent on 2010's Get Off on the Pain and concentrates on the basics: love songs and heartbreak tunes, defiant rockers and good-time anthems. He has a few new wrinkles along the way, notably on the soulful groove of "Hungover Heart" and the lite reggae pulse of "No Worries," but what satisfies here is his clean, no-frills modern country: he puts grit into the boasts of "Bones" and heart into "Every Storm (Runs Out of Rain)" and when all the songs are put together, it adds up to an album that's easy to enjoy.

Customer Reviews

The man could sing the phone book and I would love it. He could sing nursery rhymes, national anthems, or commercial jingles and it would give me goosebumps because he OOZES emotion in every single word. "It Ain't The Whiskey" is going to be a favorite, I can already tell. I've been a fan since the first album and listened to the growth that has occured with each and every release... from the songs, to the arrangments, to Gary's vocal styling itself, and I could not be prouder to raise my fist and sing along with every single a concert setting or in my own kitchen. Gary Allan is THE most underrated artist of our generation! Good work Gary! I love you man!

essential country music

Gary Allan is the most under rated country music singer out there. He has been releasing great albums since 1996. He has that roughness in his voice and a vocal range that allows him to sing any song, not to mention that he can really play the guitar, and he is just plain hot to boot. If he is not already your favorite he will be if you listen to one album!! I Love You Gary Allan!!

Born: December 5, 1967 in La Mirada, CA

Genre: Country

Years Active: '90s, '00s, '10s

Gary Allan hit the honky tonk circuit in his native Southern California at the seasoned age of 12. Playing in and out of the smoky, sweaty bars with his dad's band led Allan to follow in his father's footsteps and start his own band. When Allan returned to those same honky tonks with his own combo, the sound was true Bakersfield country: Merle Haggard, Buck Owens, and the rest. Allan spent most of his twenties honing his skills as a new traditionalist country singer; finally, in 1996, he was picked...
