iTunes Review

Sara Groves has long been one of Christian folk-pop’s most eloquent singer/songwriters, inviting comparison with Joni Mitchell, Shawn Colvin and Feist. This time, she veers away from the issues of social justice examined on previous albums towards matters closer to home. Songs like “This House” and the title track are luminous invocations of childhood memory from a grown-up perspective. Even better are darker-edged songs dealing with marital discord (“It’s Me”) and free-floating alienation (“From This One Place”). When Groves sings from a place of contentment — as she does in “Twice As Good” and “Different Kinds of Happy” — her words are grounded in a sense of struggle. The breezy, bluegrass-tinged “Setting Up the Pins” offers some lighthearted escape from the heavier themes here. “Joy Is in Our Hearts” concludes the album on an uplifting note. Groves’ dusky, slightly wistful vocals are bolstered by supple acoustic arrangements, framed overall by Charlie Peacock’s sparse, empathetic production.

A Personal Touch

Sara Groves has a gift of words. The best lyricist and poets aren't the ones that pluck the fanciest words from a thesauraus. They're the one's who take the ordinary language of our lives and recraft them from the inspiration of the intricacies of our lives. Sara's faith is so approachable, and her songs have comforted those struggling with heartache, with loss, with their faith.

"Fireflies and Songs" is a response by Sara to a comment from a record label executive, that he hadn't really heard from her in quite awhile. The songs are those of a mother of three, a wife of fifteen years, a woman of thirty-seven years, navigating, coping, loving, I think weeping at times.

Sara is a wonderful pianist, has a comforting voice, but it is the words and the story that brings her fans back again and again.

Well Beyond Expectation

I approached ths recording with little to no expectations. I had not previously heard any of Sara Groves' music but (admittedly) I was intrigued by the cd cover art in relation to the fact that she is a "Christian & Gospel" artist. In full disclosure, I am a minister and seminary professor who approaches much of the latest gospel music with the same trepidation with which I approach much of recent Hip-Hop and some R&B. I have come to expect little from much of the music in these genres. But, as in all cases, every now and then a diamond in the rough is uncovered, and what a glorious diamond "Fireflies & Songs" is. I love the spiritual, emotional, and relational reverie she takes the listener through. Her music and voice are pure and heartfelt with a raw earthy quality. This cd sounds as if the listeners just happened upon a folksy, almost existential, cultural psalmist offering relatable stories. Sara Groves, at least in this cd, presents the kind of stirring music that one might find in the work of Joni Mitchell or Tina Dico. And, at least for me, that's a wonderful place to be.

I stand in amazement. Sara's music is highly underrated, but can never be overrated. Pure, simple, intelligent, sweet, God fearing, family oriented music. I encourage every Christian to take an earnest listen and experience the beautiful gift God gave Sara.

Sara Groves, a former high-school teacher in her native Rosemont, Minnesota, burst onto the gospel scene at the dawn of the new millennium with her fresh vocals and spiritual songwriting. She's been compared to the likes of Shawn Colvin and Rich Mullins; however, Groves defines her own musical demeanor. She cannot be limited to one exact label, for her contemporary Christian hooks also meld into delicate pop. Signed to Epic, Groves issued her debut, Conversations, in early 2001, followed by a string...
