The razor is dull

Looove The Rentals! But was disappointed with this one. It has all the ingredients of a good album but it lacks in giving us that pop, rock, distortion edge that only the Rentals can give. With out that it just seems like a couple high school kids trying to hard to sound like the postal service.

A Great "Comeback"

A great addition to the band's too-small body of work, its only real problem being some flow issues stemming from the project's original conception. Still, a minor problem at best and shouldn't dissuade. Matt Sharp's career has grown more interesting and oddly esoteric since the first album's release. In many ways, these tracks are a wonderful synthesis of the Return of the Rentals debut from 1995 and Sharp's grossly underrated solo album from the early 2000s, the whole murky melancholic Tennessee backwoods low-fi thing. His touring/recording with both Goldenboy and Tegan & Sara from shortly thereafter clearly influenced his aesthetic here. Of course, I guess the strangest thing about Sharp's solo work is how better it holds up next to the painfully juvenile, and seemingly endless, releases from his old band Weezer, always mediocre but now just sad beyond words. I am truly glad that Sharp made that decision, however it went down. Artistically, he ended up much better off, and I hope Sharp and The Rentals project continue to expand and evolve.

During the spring of 1994, Sharp mounted...
