Album Review

Since Winger was marketed largely on the looks of lead singer Kip Winger, and since their sleazy rockers and lovelorn ballads cover the same old pop-metal territory, the band's high-quality musicianship tended to get overlooked. Guitarist Reb Beach earned wide praise from other musicians, and he, ex-Dixie Dregs drummer Rod Morgenstein, and keyboardist Paul Taylor bring a distinct progressive metal influence to many of the tunes on Winger. Even if the lyrics are standard issue, the album is impeccably composed, crafted, and played, with melodies, riffs, and guitar solos taking off in unexpected directions and keeping the listener slightly off balance — no easy task in the cookie-cutter hair metal genre. The only misstep is an overdone, tight-assed, totally misguided recasting of "Purple Haze." Otherwise, Winger is a surprisingly accomplished debut.

Really???

No one has the balls to write a review for Winger? When most people think of Winger they think of Kip doing some ballet moves with his perfect beard, or you think of Beavis and Butt-Head's wimpy neighbor Stewart wearing a Winger shirt. But if you can get past those images, they're actually not that bad. Give em' a chance. Who cares about their image. It's music.

Nostalgic for me

I was born in the early 80's and my older siblings were at the age where this is the stuff they started listening to...so I was exposed to it a lot. The music is actually good in my opinion. Everyone has different tastes, but I still listen to this stuff every now and again :)

Winger is mackin'

Funny thing about this album is that I bought it used at a CD shop when I was younger and had no idea who it was, though the name sounded familiar. I bought it because the logo looked 80s.

Well it was an awesome buy. Kip has a crazy good singing voice and all of the songs on this album are catchy. The only one I think they could do without is Purple Haze, I'm not a big fan of that one.

A former member of Alice Cooper's band, bassist Kip Winger formed his own group in 1986; in addition to vocalist/bassist Winger, the group featured guitarist Reb Beach, bassist Paul Taylor, and drummer Rod Morgenstein, formerly of the Dixie Dregs. Taking their name from their leader after a last-minute change from Sahara, Winger specialized in the stylish pop-metal that sent Bon Jovi and Poison to the top of the charts. The band's eponymous debut sold over a million copies on the strength of the...
