iTunes Editors’ Notes

It’s party time in El Lay on Beck’s 1999 set Midnite Vultures. But as befits this masterful pop subversive, the grooves conceal booby traps and the lyrics both tickle and lacerate. The album is awash in hot colors from the ‘70s, celebrating the era’s post-hippie hedonism with a freewheeling sense of experimentation. Beck blends in contemporary hip-hop influences to lift the album beyond retro status—“Hollywood Freaks,” for instance, sounds like Kim Fowley and George Clinton jamming with A Tribe Called Quest. Tracks like “Nicotine & Gravy,” “Peaches & Cream," and “Pressure Zone” are dense, quivering confections that whirl and swoosh around Beck’s sly vocals. “Milk & Honey” whips the froth to a particularly luscious peak, lacing its humid textures with disturbing imagery. From the fat brass soul of “Sexx Laws” to the bubbly electronica of “Get Real Paid” and the jungle funk of “Broken Train,” there’s an impressive variety to these decadent sonic visions. Beck brazenly grabs for Prince’s purple crown as he scales falsetto heights on the closing track, “Debra.”

The Best Beck Album

In my opinion, Midnite Vultures is the best Beck album, and one of the best albums in the history of music. Here's what i think of all the songs individualy: 1.)Sexx Laws (5/5) - I love it! Very very good! 2.)Nicotine & Gravy (4.5/5) - This song is often overlooked because how slow it is compared to Sexx Laws. It really is amazing though. 3.)Mixed Bizness (5/5) - In my opinion, it's the ultimate dance/party song 4.)Get Real Paid (4/5) - Very Very weird. At the same time, it's genuis! 5.)Hollywood Freaks (4.5/5) - i normally hate rap, but this is an exception. Beck can do everything right. 6.)Peaches & Cream (5/5) - Everything about this song is awesome 7.)Broken Train (5/5) - This song is very smart when it comes to hooking you in. It's very catchy 8.)Milk & Honey (5/5) - Very creative. This song has at least 3 different styles of music in it 9.)Beatiful Way (5/5) - Beck knows just how to contrast one song from the rest. He can write hard songs and soft ballads. This one is one of my favorites 10.)Pressure Zone (4.5/5) - Has a very catchy guitar line. 11.)Debra (5/5) - Beck can write can contrast, but he can sing contrast to! He hits the high notes perfectly 12.)Untitled Track (1/5) - This isn't really a song, it's just an annoying hidden track As you can see, There's A LOT of good songs here. An incredible album. Buy it!

Beck knows how to create interesting backdrops.

When Beck's first big album "Mellow Gold" came out - I was hooked. Every song felt like a story with real feeling and depth to it. Songs like Pay no mind, Whiskey Clone and Truckdriving Neighbors seemed to be telling the story of a strange folksy, apocalyptic, back woods Americana..... It was cool, creepy, storylike and somehow funny all at once. - Not something every musician can do. My impression after listening to Vultures when it came out in 1999.... Beck is a genius and a shapeshifter like few musicians before him.... He is able to craft brilliant songs while painting a backdrop for each album that makes you feel like you are somewhere else or that you are listening to someone else. On Vultures you feel like you've hitched a ride onto an MTV party bus destined for the outer reaches of the solar system in the 23rd century. Your guests on the bus? Michael jackson, a few coke addicted booty shaking Miami beach babes, blinged out gansta rappers and a few break dancing graffiti artists. Sitting in the corner of the bus is Beck and Woodie Guthrie playing guitar while occasionally staring out into the cosmos. It's that strange and brilliant.....but just like with "Mellow Gold" - Beck is having fun here, you can hear him and Woody in the background laughing the whole way.

Oh My God, He's done it again

This album just plain F****** rocks. Beck is a creative genius that never follows the guidlines of genres. Midnight Vultures is, in my opinion, the best branch of his creative outlet. Need I say more?
