iTunes Review

Recorded at the Santa Barbara County Bowl in September 1979 during her tour supporting Mingus, Shadows and Light was Joni Mitchell’s second double-LP live album. The years 1975 through 1979 had been adventurous ones for Mitchell. The all-star band here—consisting of guitarist Pat Metheny, bassist Jaco Pastorius, drummer Don Alias, keyboardist Lyle Mays, and saxophonist Michael Brecker—are among the few that could bring the complex songwriting of “In France They Kiss on Main Street,” “Coyote,” Charles Mingus’ “Goodbye Pork Pie Hat," and “The Dry Cleaner from Des Moines” to palpable life. This album remains underrated in Mitchell’s catalog.

CD is very good, Video is even better

The CD can't help but be good, this is Joni performing some of her best jazz numbers with the elite ensemble that accompanied her on the phenomenal "Hejira" and "Hissing.. . ." studio albums. Missing from the CD, however, is a rare and exciting bass solo by the late great Jaco Pastorius (my all-time favorite bass player) that appears on the video. If you like concert videos and can find "Shadows and Light," I highly recommend it.

Phenomenal Joni

I was fortunate enough to have been in attendance for most of the songs on this album- and I was only 17!!! Joni Mitchell has always been able to attract the finest musicians and this recording shows it. From the energetic Intro to Woodstock, there is not a dud among the tracks. Often overlooked by her fans, this album stands out for me- probably because I am blown away by the fine musicianship she and her band display here. Long live Jaco!

No female artist better typified the singer/songwriter movement of the '70s than Joni Mitchell, though her public image as the serious, sensitive woman with a guitar shortchanged her abilities, ambitions, and accomplishments. Mitchell's gift for writing personal, folk-inspired songs about the thorny side of life and love was inarguable (particularly on albums like 1970's Ladies of the Canyon and 1971's Blue), but Mitchell also brought the same smarts and eloquence to glossy pop on her commercial...
