Album Review

Kataklysm's Shadows & Dust finds the Canadian death metal veterans doing their thing with ferociously uncompromised fury. Unlike some extreme metal bands who attempt to take baby steps toward accessibility with hints of melody and keyboard textures, Kataklysm keep it pretty pure here, spitting out their monster-growled aggression with astounding technical ability and an unsettling array of tempos. The rat-tat-tat machine-gun opening of "Illuminati," for example, effectively gives way to a crushing mid-tempo groove, which in turn dissolves into blinding grindcore chaos. Another interesting fact: there are very few guitar solos. The entire album (40 lean minutes) proves to be an intense listen, and fans should be thrilled.

This is an amazing album... i started listening to Kataklysm's latest CD first and then went back to check out the older stuff....this one is gruesome....all i have to say is that the Guitar Solo in the song "Face the Face of War" is possibly the greatest thing i have ever heard if u buy one song buy that one and just listen to that solo!!

Kataklysm Shadows and Dust

great guitar and opening quotes etc... what ever you want to call them this album exceeds most other bands.

Formed: 1991 in Montreal, Quebec, Canada

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '90s, '00s, '10s

Whether they are the most punishing band ever could be debated for hours over multiple bottles of Jim Beam. But one thing is for sure: Kataklysm are an extremely heavy death metal band and have managed to remain interesting throughout their career. Their other amazing feat is that they have managed to maintain the same lineup...
