Insomnium delivers…again!

I'm ready to declare Insomnium the Masters of the melodic death metal sub-genre. I found out about the album a little late (about a month before release)--thankfully, because I did not have to wait in anticipation for very long! After seeing them live (the best wait to hear Insomnium) and picking up their last two albums, I thought they could not possibly top their prior successes. I must say, I stand corrected. Shadows of the Dying Sun stands out in a field of modern music that by comparison has neither soul or substance. Insomnium has paced this album out deliberately, ebbing and flowing like a great tide of melodeath awesomeness, shifting from relentless blast-beats to soaring, alternating lead guitars that tug at the heart, while Niilo's brutal growls deliver much-improved and thoughtful lyrics to probe the weary soul. As always, Insomnium show they are greater than the sum of their parts--committed musicians that have somehow managed to come together as a team with their very best talents to deliver something wholly unique. While We Sleep, Revelation, Black Heart Rebellion, Lose to Night, and the previously-released Ephemeral are all highly recommended for anyone who enjoys a strong dose of 'music' with their metal music.

Best Insomnium yet!

Best melodic death metal band on the scene today, hands down. Deep lyrics delivered forcefully with Niilo's growls, whispers, or clean vocals, all backed by crushing melodies. These guys have kept alive the flame that In Flames has let gutter and nearly die. Insomnium!!

Awe-inspiring music!!

I don’t write reviews for music. I just listen to it. But this album is just remarkable. Insomnium is one of the finest melodic death metal bands in the world, and Shadows of the Dying Sun cements them as one of the best bands in music today. The titular track is just haunting and beautiful in every way. There aren’t enough stars to say how incredible this album is. I feel it in my heart and I know it in my mind. \m/ \m/
