iTunes Editors’ Notes

After two albums under the tutelage of Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff, the Jacksons used Destiny to assume full creative control of their music for the first time in their career. The risk paid off — the album was the brothers’ most successful release since leaving Motown in 1975. “Blame It On the Boogie” and “Shake Your Body” are two of the era’s most brilliant fusions of smooth R&B and disco, a hybrid that would see its culmination the following year with Michael Jackson’s Off the Wall. In a larger way, Destiny positions Michael for his solo breakthrough. With “Push Me Away,” “Things I Do For You,” and “Destiny,” one can hear his confidence as a singer growing. Additionally, he is credited as co-writer on the album’s biggest and best songs. This period not only marks Michael’s transition from childhood to adulthood, but also his graduation from boy wonder to accomplished musical director. Destiny is both the peak of the Jacksons’ career as a quintet and the beginning of Michael’s astounding solo path.

When Michael grooved as an adult with the bro's

This album is the essence of the best fruitions of the adult Jackson bro's. It came before Michael went mega-star. There is still a "Jackson-sound" here but with Michael still at the helm. An unpretentious vulnerability and liberated freedom that he still had before the mega-stardom. Its like he's just discovering his adult talents. Amazing, amazing. Refreshing. Shake Your Body was so hot when it came out that it blew everything out of the water. The bassline just killed. All Night Dancin' was a taste of the future- driving hard dance groove. This album was a mix of very tender, almost naive sweet ballads- that were so sincere that they were really likeable (later solo ballads could be overproduced at times- too affected), and the thrills of young adult Jacksons getting their groove on. Their best studio adult album, followed by Triumph. The inside jacket photo of the album had a close up group photo of the brothers and there was such a soulfulness to Michael's face then- so different than the body-dysmorphic pics that come later. This was sweet Michael that those of us who grew up with him remember.

The Jacksons As Men

This is the beginning of a wonderful career at Epic. These guys and this album was the best. Push Me Away is a classic. Blame It On the Boogie was Michael beginning to blossom. Bless His Soul is also a classic a must download and if you were around during this time then you will know this is a classic album.

The apex

This was the best Jacksons/Jackson 5 Album. The best writing, the boys all at the peak of their vocal talents. This album should have been the beginning of an extended career for the Jacksons as adults. But it turned out to be the last quality group effort

Formed: 1966 in Gary, IN

Genre: R&B/Soul

Years Active: '60s, '70s, '80s

The Jackson 5 were one of the biggest phenomenons in pop music during the early '70s, and the last great group to come out of the Motown hitmaking machine before Marvin Gaye and Stevie Wonder shifted the label's focus to more individual visions. The Jackson 5's infectious brand of funky pop-soul was a definite departure from the typically smooth, elegant Motown sound, as befitting the group's youth and the dawn of a new decade. That youth, coupled with the merchandising juggernaut that sprang up...
