Album Review

The stylistic consistency of Four80East is remarkable on Nocturnal. The production and compositional values achieved on these ten tracks are a testament to the duo's passion and commitment to their music as well as their formidable technical wizardry. The duo — Rob DeBoer and Tony Grace — wrote all the songs and are joined on their ultra-sonic groove of soul, funk, jazz, and fun by tenor saxophonist Jon Stewart, flutist Andrew McPherson, and trumpeter Ivana Santilli, and together they provide not only sonic pleasures but a visual imagery that emanates from the upbeat swing of "Bumper to Bumper" to the frenzied synthesizer blitz on "Drive Time." However, Nocturnal is more organic and diverse than their previous CD The Album in that it possesses more musical forms and styles, like more funky percussion, groove chops, and acid jazz layers. Ivana Santilli and Andrew McPherson both play excellent trumpet and flute solos on "Wake and Bake," and this song is likely to give the group its biggest hit. This is a great CD for those into synth sounds and the creativity they provide for a small ensemble.

smooth background music / soundtrack for life!

I met this album in a sleek brand new car, coming out of downtown Charlotte in nightlife and this album, the environment and mood it set was super smooth. This is my favorite album for office background music.

Amazing jazz album!

I love this album. Great bass! Makes for great driving music. I even use it to work out! 10 stars if I could!

This is my all-time favorite jazz album! I came across it at a listening station at Barnes & Noble and immediately bought it. I've since purchased their other two CDs as well. The title of this one, Nocturnal, is appropriate. It is great music to listen to at night while just chillin' in your comfy leather chair. My favorite Four80East in order of preference: 1) Nocturnal, 2) The Album, 3) Round Three. Great music. I can't wait to hear more from these Canadians. Buy it NOW!

Toronto-based Four80East is actually a studio side-project for Rob DeBoer (piano, guitar, bass, programming) and Tony Grace (drums, programming), who, along with Grace's brother Paul, run Boomtang Records. Four80East developed over several years, between Grace and DeBoer's remix schedule (for the likes of Econoline Crush, Amanda Marshall, Corey Hart, Wild Strawberries, Philosopher Kings, and Ashley MacIsaac) and their other project, the pop band the Boomtang Boys. Four80East started as an outlet...
