Spokanefan

Fay Claassen is the singer that will make all instrumental musicians swoon. Her absolutely dead-on pitch, her ability to leap awkward intervals without a miss or a slide, her phrasing, her understated perfection separate her from nearly all other singers. No, she doesn't have Sarah Vaughn's voice nor Maureen McGovern's athletic flexibility and her lack of pointless flamboyant showiness will keep her off American Idol. But what she does have is unique and fabulous. She knows how to be part of the ensemble. The beginning, ending and length of every note is absolutely precise, just like a well trained horn player in a swinging big band. The vibrato is minimal and always appropriate. Her phrasing is smart and always musical. O.K., I admit it--I love her! Catch her with Ivan Paduart and the Metropole Orchestra, or her new album, 'Sing' with the HR Big Band-- you'll fall in love too.
Ilja Reijngoud is among the half dozen or so really great trombone players; in the same league with Frank Rosalino, Andy Martin, Conrad Herwig, Carl Fontana, Jiggs Whigham and Bart Van Lier. On this album he and the quartet are typically marvelous. Listen to his album 'Untamed World'; it's the new standard for trombone section playing
The recording quality is a bit echoey like in a large marble men's room, but there are no pretensions here of slick. And while great poetry doesn't require music nor great music poetry to be effective, there are moments when the lyrics are a bit ponderous. That aside, this is a real musical treat.
