iTunes Review

Three Dog Night were built on the tripartite vocal blend of Chuck Negron, Danny Hutton, and Cory Wells and boasted an unbelievably accomplished backing band that featured the undersung guitar heroics of Michael Allsup, a guy whose playing is as dirty as it is sweet. The brass- and organ-rich arrangements set a tone that fit smoothly into the '70s radio milieu.

I'm a fan of classic rock and this certainly satisfied me. After hearing "Shambala", I decided to buy this album. I had not really heard of Three Dog Night, but I had heard some of their songs... "Shambala", and "Mama Told Me" are my two favorites, and this is a great deal for the amount of great music you get. Twenty-one songs! Definitely worth the buy.

One of the best bands of the late 60's early 70's

This is one of the best bands of the late 60's and early 70's. I rank this group up with all the other greats such as: Chicago, CCR, Blood Sweat and Tears and Crosby, Stills and Nash. They have a good solid rock sound. One thing that is unique about this collection is that it contains the hit single versions of the songs. The other greatest hits packages contained the album versions. I tend to like the ending of "An Old Fashioned Love Song" better on the hit single version, because it has more life to it. If you already have the other greatest hits packages, you may still want to get this one as well.

Three Dog Night was one of the personifications of its music era and are under-rated. This band had a rare unification that resulted in some great music. I tend to enjoy songs like "Out in the Country" and "Family of Man" as much or more than some of their better known hits. "Joy to the World" was a commercial success but is not the band's best or even representative of their body of work- try the first 7 songs. I disagree with the review's reason of the break-up of the band being "creative differences" as much as it was Chuck Negron's past substance abuse problem. Who cares if they didn't write the songs- neither did Sinatra, Aretha or many of today's artists. It doesn't diminish their historical value as a band or as a required addition to one's collection. This is a wonderful compilation that I am pleased to see offered by I-Tunes!

Three Dog Night scored a succession of 21 hit singles, including eleven Top Tens, and twelve consecutive gold albums from 1969 to 1975, thanks to the slick, sometimes soulful vocal harmonies of singers Danny Hutton, Chuck Negron, and Cory Wells and an excellent ear for quality material. While often criticized as commercial, the band was noted for its creative arrangements and interpretations, and their cover choices gave exposure (and royalties) to several talented songwriters: Nilsson ("One"), Laura...
