iTunes Review

The albums in this collection are Mastered for iTunes with the exception of Recycler which is a standard album. This 2013 collection of ZZ Top's first 10 albums recorded for Warner Brothers over their first 20 years have been Mastered for iTunes (with exception of 1990's Recycler). This also includes the original LP mixes of ZZ Top's First Album, Rio Grande Mud, and Tejas, which have been unavailable since the CD age. Before their unexpected rash of successes in the '80s, ZZ Top had been one of the heaviest blues bands to come out of Texas. Billy Gibbons is a well-acknowledged guitarist whose limited vocals—and those of bassist Dusty Hill—served the band well throughout their long career. Tunes such as "Jesus Just Left Chicago," "La Grange," "Heard It on the X," and "Tush" were textbook rock 'n' roll blues for the '70s. With 1983's Eliminator, ZZ Top made the jump from respected rock 'n' rollers to mainstream MTV superstars with the "modern" '80s productions driving hits like "Gimme All Your Lovin'," "Sharp Dressed Man," and "Legs."

Back to the Original Recordings

Tejas was released on CD with the drums overdubbed and sounded much different than the orig recording. Thankfully they went back to the original recordings for the digital remasterings. Thanks Willy G!

Why is this so expensive?

The return to the original masters are very welcome. These versions sound so much better than the previously released CD versions, especially better than the ZZ Top Six Pack box. I love the first six albums and the rest aren't bad though not as raw as early ZZ Top. I also recommend Rhytmeen, Mescalero and La Futura. XXX isn't bad.

However, why is this digital download $69.99 (as of June 2013)? I was able to purchased the CD box set for $39.99 and who wouldn't rather have the CD and simply rip the music to the computer for use on the iPad.

The real deal AT LAST

For the first time in digital form the drum machine overdubs are gone. Not just for Tejas but for Rio Grande Med, Tres Hombres, and the studio tracks on Fandago too. Good riddance! Those early records are true classics with really unique rhythm work that just didn't click with the effects-laden drum tracks. Here at last is the real stuff, well worth the extra dough.

A sturdy American blues-rock trio from Texas, ZZ Top specialized in down-and-dirty blues-rock during the '70s, then scored colorful MTV hits during the 1980s. Formed in Houston in 1970 by Billy Gibbons (guitar), Dusty Hill (bass), and Frank Beard (drums), the trio came from a pair of rival bands the Moving Sidewalks (Gibbons) and American Blues (Hill and Beard). Their first two albums reflected the strong blues roots and Texas humor of the band. Their third album (Tres Hombres) gained them national...
