How I Miss Them!

One of the great untold stories of indie rock is how a band as special as Longpigs managed to muck it all up. Listening to this record, as well as the follow-up, Mobile Home, reminds me of how great they truly were, and how messed up it is that they are not heralded as being in the same class as Radiohead (or any of the Britpop-era elite for that matter). When this record came out, Longpigs were derided as Radiohead rip-offs, but the truth is, it would have come out BEFORE The Bends if it wasn't for their record label folding at that time. It was created BEFORE The Bends. So they should have been praised for their unique and stylish guitar rock, and instead got screwed over. I know The Bends wasn't the first Radiohead album, but it was, as anyone knows, the first one that mattered because it was where they outran their REM/Pixies influences and became the beast that everyone knows and loves. Anyhow, if you're somehow reading this, get your hands on the entire Longpigs catalogue and you will not be sorry. It took years, but I now have everything that was ever released (that I know of) and I think the B-sides were as essential and spellbinding as their full-lengths. My favorite bands ever are (in no certain order) : The Auteurs, Longpigs, The Smiths, The Veils, The Walkmen, Belle & Sebastian, Radiohead, Wilco, Gorky's Zygotic Mynci, The Raveonettes, Spiritualized, Elliott Smiths, Bob Dylan, and yeah, I could go on and on but I won't. If you like some of those bands, dig the Longpigs. Go ahead. Dig them.

Formed: 1994 in Sheffield, Yorkshire, England

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '90s

A Britpop band with energy and grit besides the obvious melodic flair and arrogant airs, Longpigs formed in their hometown of Sheffield in 1994, around vocalist Crispin Hunt, guitarist Richard Hawley, bassist Simon Stafford and drummer Dee Boyle. Although they were signed to a major label just months after playing their first gig, the band were crushed when the label went under, especially since a new label would have to pay £500,000 to release them from their contract. Enter the deep pockets of...
