iTunes Editors’ Notes

David Johansen spent many years searching for that elusive hit. The New York Dolls and his solo career never took off while his Buster Poindexter persona busted through to prime-time. In the meantime, he recorded a sizable catalog of fine music that proves he’s more than a Mick Jagger look-a-like. Johansen has a stylistic flexibility that’s on full display on his second solo album, 1979’s In Style. There’s an extra polish on the hook-driven “Melody” that should’ve been a hit. “She” cranks with producer Mick Ronson’s influence carrying through. But the real excitement here is on the adventurous turns. “Big City” cruises in luxury with nighttime horns softening the reality. “Swaheto Woman” adds a disco groove (and appears in its five-minute album version and three-minute single edit). Reggae accents highlight “She Knew She Was Falling In Love” Johansen even trips out on a Springsteen-like epic for “Justine” and “Flamingo Road.” Street-tough but savvy, Johansen had the talent and instincts to become a big star and the tunes featured here sure sound like hits.

Customer Reviews

Odd but endearing

For someone who loved the punk/glam blast of the Dolls (and the whole 70s-80s punk movement), this seemed like a guilty pleasure at the time of its release. Friends thought that Johansen had sold out - I wasn't sure. But "Melody" sounds like the Four Tops, with David doing a great Levi Stubbs. "Big City" is rock noir romanticism; "Swaheto Woman," despite the mangling of the South African name, is nearly inspiring. A fun album if you don't take it too seriously...

Admit it Neil, even if you take it seriously, it's still fun!
Great album, great artist.

Best known for his tenure fronting the hugely influential New York Dolls, David Johansen was a true chameleon; throughout the course of a career which saw him transform from a lipstick-smeared proto-punk hero into an urbane blue-eyed soul man and finally into a tuxedo-clad lounge lizard, he remained a rock & roll original, an unpredictable iconoclast and a true cultural innovator. Born January 9, 1950, in Staten Island, NY, Johansen joined his first band, the Vagabond Missionaries, in his mid-teens....
